Spin dynamics of free carriers and magnetic ions in diluted-magnetic-semiconductor heterostructures
Projektbeschreibung

In this project the dynamics of free carrier spins and localized spins of magnetic ions in diluted-magnetic-semiconductor (DMS) heterostructures will be studied. Magneto-optical spectroscopy will be combined with a variety of time-resolved techniques in order to cover a wide dynamical range from 100 fs up to 1 ms. Mechanisms of spin relaxation and of spin- and energy transfer in the coupled systems of free carriers, magnetic ions and lattice (phonons) will be investigated in a wide temperature range from 270 mK to 300 K and in external magnetic fields up to 17 T. New phenomena controlled by the exchange interaction of carrier spins with magnetic ions, which is giantly enhanced in DMS, will be in the center of attention. Objects of these studies are DMS quantum wells and quantum dots based on (Cd,Mn)Te, (Cd,Mn)Se and (Zn,Mn)Se, as well as novel (Zn,Mn)O heterostructures, which are promising for the room temperature ferromagnetism induced by free carrier ordering of the Mn spins. Novel concepts for controlling magnetization dynamics by engineering of spatial Mn profiles, by spin diffusion in the Mn spin system and by means of free carriers will be examined in view of their implementation in spintronics devices.
